IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM DEPUTY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF CRIME LABORATORIES
Letter from Deputy Assistant Director Johnson February 13, 2012 (PDF)
The Crime Lab Service is currently implementing a new Laboratory Information Management System.  Initially, you may experience a delay in submission, processing, and/or reporting.  We apologize for this inconvenience.  We expect this system to ultimately improve our timeliness and responsiveness to your requested services.

As a result of compliance with accreditation standards, there are certain requirements of communication and policies regarding case acceptance that must be upheld by the DPS Crime Laboratory Service. The Physical Evidence Handbook (PDF) outlines specific parameters and limitations regarding the submission of evidence (PDF) to a DPS crime laboratory.

ATTENTION – In an effort to provide more efficient and effective service for Drug, DNA, GSR Primer Residue, and computer forensic testing requests, the DPS Crime Laboratory Service has implemented the following case acceptance policies:

Not all DPS crime labs perform the same types of forensic analysis. The Physical Evidence Handbook (PDF) outlines which laboratory services (PDF) are available at each DPS crime lab.

Submission of evidence to DPS crime labs for forensic testing regarding drugs, blood alcohol, DNA, trace evidence, firearms, and toolmarks is based on the geographic area and the county of offense. Click the following links to view a map showing what areas are covered by each lab:

The DPS Crime Laboratory Service does not perform external calibration services. The specific evidence sections of the Physical Evidence Handbook (PDF) outlines specific details and limitations regarding the testing offered by Texas DPS.
