Training

A variety of training is available to DPS Communications personnel. After initial employment they must complete CCTP (Communications Comprehensive Training Program), which includes intense study on different job duties specific to the Communications Service, including radio, telephone, and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and telecommunications.

In addition to CCTP and on-the-job training, a 40-hour Basic Communications School is a requirement for new employees. Training is also provided for TLETS and TCIC which is required for TCLEOSE certification, as well as for other databases, including Omnixx, TDEx, DLS and EPIC which may be used routinely in day-to-day operations. Additionally, employees must attend re-certification every 2 years at Communications In-Service school. Required on-line training includes but is not limited to, NIMS and the Incident Command System. Personnel may also participate in field training with the CEOT, in-car and interoperability exercises and Texas Highway Patrol Recruit Classes. Supervisory personnel are required to attend additional training as assigned or as required of their positions.
