Instructor Certificate Renewal Information

The Texas Department of Public Safety will mail renewal notices to instructors before the applicant’s certification expires.

Renewal Application Submission
There are two methods available for renewing your instructor certification:

  1. Online electronic submission of your renewal application
  2. Paper submission of your renewal application:
    1. Applicant is required to request a paper renewal application from TXDPS (see renewal notice for directions on how to place a request) 
    2. Requested renewal application will be mailed to the applicant and will include a self-addressed envelope for return to TXDPS

Online Renewal Application Documentation
Applicants who renew online must mail the online checklist if required.

Paper Renewal Application Documentation
Upon receipt of the TXDPS paper renewal application, applicants who choose to mail in a paper renewal application must return the following items to the Department:

  1. Renewal application for Instructor Certification
  2. Affidavits

Renewal Fees
Renewal fees will be documented on your paper renewal application or will be electronically calculated during your online application.

*Fingerprint Update
As a courtesy, TXDPS will resubmit renewal applicants’ existing fingerprints  for background check processing; however, if fingerprints on file do not meet current FBI or Texas quality standards applicants will be required to submit new fingerprints to complete the renewal application process.
