MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF
Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief W. Nim Kidd believes that emergency managers and first responders can make their jobs easier by supporting Texans as they take care of themselves and their families before, during and after disasters. When it comes to flooding, the one critically important, life saving message is: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
RECOVERY: THE ABCs OF PDAs
Whether a severe storm, a catastrophic hurricane or a devastating wildfire has struck you area, opening the door to federal assistance in the wake of a disaster begins when local officials put pencil to paper in the Preliminary Damage Assessment process.
HERMINE: MEXICO STORMS CAN MEAN TRAGEDY IN TEXAS
Tropical Storm Hermine brought record rainfall to Central Texas and increased the number of Texas flood fatalities to 13 for the year. The storm proved yet again that Texans who live miles away from the beach also need to be extra cautious when a tropical storm is in the Gulf of Mexico.
AGENCY PARTNERS: TEXAS ANIMAL HEALTH COMMISSION
Severe storms and other emergencies in Texas have an impact on livestock and other large animals. That’s when the Texas Animal Health Commission steps up to the plate. Helping to evacuate livestock, to assist stray animals in distress, and to identify and return lost livestock are only a few of the commission’s emergency management tasks.
TDEM PLANS UNIT: STATE & LOCAL PLAN REVISIONS GET GOING
The Plans Unit has begun work on revisions to the State of Texas Emergency Management Plan, which can trigger opportunities for revisions for local planning templates. The priorities during this planning cycle are discussed in this article.
