COASTAL COUNTIES COMMAND WORKSHOP
Brazoria - Galveston - Matagorda
More than 100 representatives from three Texas coastal counties, Brazoria, Galveston and Matagorda, met March 5-6 for a Coastal Counties Command Workshop at the San Luis Hotel in Galveston. The workshop focused on what would happen if a Category 3 hurricane made landfall with direct impact to the three counties.
Exercise participants practiced using WebEOC to log and track personnel and resource needs as they would during a standard activation approximately three days out from landfall.
"All of the workshop participants were tracked via WebEOC on the system’s resource tracking board," said David J. Popoff, TDEM State Coordinator for Region 2. "Three volunteers entered all the 100-plus participants into WebEOC. They were given less than two minutes of training and were able to enter everyone into WebEOC and record their status in less than 45 minutes."
Many workshop participants noted how WebEOC could allow a jurisdiction to quickly input information for all responding team members to see at the same time.
"The system provides a one-stop shop for a jurisdiction to log resources and requests, and to communicate with other jurisdictions and the state as needed," said Popoff.
Concepts discussed at the workshop will be reviewed at the Region 2 TDEM/DSHS Regional Disaster Response Workshop May 23 – May 24, 2012 at the Anadarko Tower, 3rd Floor, 1201 Lake Robbins Drive in The Woodlands. Interested persons may visit www.preparingtexas.org to register.
Emergency management directors from each of the participating counties attended the workshop, which included Brazoria County Judge Joe King, Galveston County Judge Mark Henry, City of Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski and Matagorda County Judge Nate McDonald. Disaster District Chairs Capt. Derek Rodriguez from Houston and Lt. James Reyer from Texas City also participated.
The workshop planning committee included TDEM District Coordinator for Region 2 Mike Jones, Brazoria County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Rosa, Brazoria County Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Glenn LaMont, Alvin Emergency Management Coordinator Terry Lucas, Clute Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Wicker, Galveston Emergency Management Coordinator Charlie Kelly and the Galveston County Emergency Management office.
