DPS TROOPERS JUDGE RED CROSS VEHICLE EXERCISE

Coastal Counties Command Workshop

From March 21 through March 25, the Coastal Bend Chapter of the American Red Cross held its 2nd Annual Emergency Response Vehicle Rodeo at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds in Robstown, Texas.

This training exercise enhanced road awareness and capabilities of the American Red Cross volunteers that operate the most publically recognizable Red Cross disaster response vehicle known as an ERV, Emergency Response Vehicle (Mass Feeding Vehicles). The operation included vehicle inspections for road worthiness and evaluation of driver teams on various vehicle operations such as: backing up, turning into loading dock areas, and parallel parking.

While performing these maneuvers, each team member was evaluated on proper use of hand signals as a spotter and as the driver. Four State Troopers: Rodney Hernandez, Tiffany Rosas, Peyton Sherrer, Raul Villapando from Region 3, graciously assisted as judges while also offering recommendations on improving team hand signal communication. The State Troopers worked over eight hours in the Robstown mid-spring hot sun environment along with two State Farm Insurance agents. Two American Red Cross National Disaster Services Transportation volunteer staff were on hand to assist as judges and evaluate the contest for use as a national training process.

The Southern Baptist Convention Mass Care Feeding Kitchen participated and provided lunch and dinner on Saturday, March 24. Additionally, several American Red Cross Disaster Services basic classes were offered to the participating American Red Cross Mass Care volunteers. A great time was had by all and the Texas and Louisiana American Red Cross chapters gained more experienced ERV drivers thanks to the positive attitude and training provided by the Texas State Troopers. The American Red Cross Coastal Bend Chapter thanks Capt. Rhonda Lawson and the Region 3 Texas State Troopers for their assistance in ensuring a successful 2nd Annual ERV Road-E-O and Training Institute.
