October 29, 2001 Halloween Safety Stressed Halloween is just around the corner and the Texas Department of Public Safety is reminding Texans the holiday brings increased safety responsibilities. "Children get very excited about Halloween and may become careless while trick-or-treating," said Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr., director of the DPS. "Drivers need to be especially careful and aware that night." On Halloween 1999, there were seven auto/pedestrian injuries. Drivers are encouraged to slow down around groups of children, and to be especially careful in backing out of driveways. Motorists should watch for children darting out from between parked cars, and those walking on the road, median or curb. Trick-or-treaters should follow these basic safety rules: · Look both ways before crossing roadways. Always walk, don't run. · Cross the roadway at intersections and crosswalks when possible. · Toy guns and knives are discouraged--they could be mistaken for the real thing. · Costumes should be light in color, and short enough to avoid tripping. · Reflective material of some kind on the costume is strongly encouraged. · Avoid masks--use face paint instead for better visibility and peripheral vision. · Travel in groups with adult supervision. · Do not enter the cars and homes of strangers. Avoid homes without visible porch lights. · Carry a flashlight and make sure an adult accompanies small children. Be extremely careful when crossing streets. · Never trick-or-treat in unfamiliar areas. · Take all treats home for an adult to inspect before eating anything. Never eat unwrapped candy. |
