The "Texas Automated Vehicle Inspection System" or "TAVIS" is a system primarily intended to automate the safety inspection process and reporting for inspection stations and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Instead of reporting safety inspections using the VI-8 log book, inspectors will enter the inspection information directly into a specialized computer system (TAVIS Unit) that will immediately send the information to a centralized computer database. These TAVIS Units are provided to non-emissions inspection stations at no cost to the station. Emissions stations will continue to report safety inspections, as they have in the past, using the vehicle emissions testing equipment.
